Before you choose

This is a big Christmas for superhero fans: Avengers: Doomsday reaches UK cinemas on 18 December, and Spider-Man: Brand New Day has already brought new sets to the shops. These ten gifts run from a 23 cm Imaginext Superman and a box of Avengers jigsaws, both marked 3+, to LEGO Marvel and DC builds marked 9+. Seven of them are not in our year-round superhero guide.

Marvel or DC?

Most children have a side. Marvel fans here can choose from Spider-Man, the Hulk, Iron Man and the Avengers; DC fans from Batman and Superman. If you are not sure, the logo on their pyjamas or lunchbox is usually a good guide.

The youngest picks split both ways: Imaginext's Superman, Batmobile and Batcopter are DC and marked 3+, and Ravensburger's four Avengers jigsaws are Marvel and marked 3+ too. From four there is a posable DC Premier Batman and the Hot Wheels Spider-Man and Hulk track, and Marvel carries on through three LEGO sets up to 9+.

For three to five-year-olds

Imaginext figures are made for preschool hands. The XL Superman is about 23 cm tall and needs no batteries. The Metal Force Batmobile and the Batcopter vs Man-Bat set each come with small figures and a launcher, a button on the Batmobile and a lever on the Batcopter, which fires a disc.

From four, the Hot Wheels Spider-Man and Hulk track adds speed: slam-launch Spider-Man's car round the loop to knock out three villains, and when all three are down the Hulk smashes in to finish the job. Mattel lists no batteries for it, and it joins other Speed Snap track.

LEGO Marvel and DC from seven

LEGO's superhero sets step up in size with age. Spider-Man Car vs. Venomized Wolverine is a 134-piece build marked 7+ with a spring-shooter car, a good first LEGO Marvel set for a seven-year-old who wants a chase to play out.

At 9+, Epic Battle: Hulkbuster vs. The Hulk is a fully jointed Hulkbuster on a display base, and the Batman v Superman Batmobile has an armoured Batman with a fabric cape and a gold coin built into the car. For a Marvel fan counting down to 18 December, the Avengers: Doomsday Quinjet is also marked 9+ and comes with four minifigures from the film, so it can be built in the week before the film opens.

Before you wrap them

Launchers and spring shooters fire small parts, so keep them away from children under the marked age and agree where they can be fired. Imaginext's XL Superman is the simplest choice for a three-year-old: one large figure, nothing to fire and no batteries.

How we chose these superhero gifts

We read the age marking and contents of each gift on its maker's own site, Mattel's, Ravensburger's or LEGO's, between 5 and 17 October 2026, and kept to no more than three gifts from any one range, and each is sold by The Entertainer through an Awin link we have checked. What superhero gift suits a 3-year-old?
Imaginext's XL Superman is marked 3+, about 23 cm tall and needs no batteries. The Imaginext Batmobile and Batcopter sets are also 3+, but both fire discs, so keep an eye on where they land.
Which superhero toys suit a 4 or 5-year-old at Christmas?
Two gifts here are marked 4+: the DC Premier Batman, a 6.5-inch figure with 22 points of articulation and a fabric cape, and the Hot Wheels Spider-Man and Hulk track, which needs no batteries. The three Imaginext sets and the Avengers jigsaws are marked 3+, so they suit a five-year-old too.
