At one and two, the best Christmas presents are the ones a child can pick up and use straight away: something to push, stack, post, tap or ride. One or two: read the marking first

Five of these ideas are marked 12 months+ by the manufacturer: the Rainbow Baby Walker & Puzzle, ABC Learning Blocks, the Wooden Balancing Ark Animal Stacker, Meadow Bees Gears & Cogs and the Rainbow Tunnel Toy. The other five are marked 18 months+. For a child who has just turned one, keep to the 12 months+ group.

None of these is marked for babies under 12 months. For a younger baby, choose a product whose manufacturer marking covers their age, and treat that marking as a safety instruction rather than a guide to difficulty.

Gifts for first steps
