Before you choose
Superhero fans come in two kinds: preschoolers who know the heroes from TV shows, and older children who follow the films. The toys that suit each are quite different. This guide sorts them by age, from a LEGO DUPLO Spidey set at two to the Avengers: Doomsday Quinjet at nine, with eight toys whose age marking and contents we checked on each maker's own site.
Which heroes, and from where
Young children usually meet superheroes through preschool shows such as Spidey and His Amazing Friends, Iron Man and His Awesome Friends and DC Super Friends. These versions are friendly, colourful and short on peril, and the toys based on them are made for small hands and simple stories.
Older children tend to follow the films, where the heroes, villains and vehicles are more detailed. Toys based on films, such as the Spider-Verse mech or The Batman's Batmobile, ask for longer builds and suit a child who knows the story.
- Ask which show or film they watch, and which hero they always pick.
- Check whether they want a toy to play with or a model to display.
- Look at the villain as well as the hero: a battle needs both sides.
- Check the age marking against the size of the pieces.
Superhero toys by age: 2, 3, 4, 6 and 9
At two, LEGO DUPLO Team Spidey Webquarters (2+, 65 pieces) puts Spidey against Rhino with big, easy bricks. At three, the Imaginext DC Super Friends XL Batman is a 9-inch figure with no batteries, sized for a preschooler to carry everywhere.
From four, LEGO Loki vs. Team Iron Man (4+, 204 pieces) builds a headquarters with a jet, a car and a mech, using the characters from Iron Man and His Awesome Friends. From six, the LEGO Marvel battle sets begin, such as Miles Morales Mech vs. Spider-Man 2099 (6+, 135 pieces).
From nine, the bigger film models arrive: The Batman Batmobile (9+, 330 pieces) and the Avengers: Doomsday Quinjet (9+, 433 pieces).
Superhero toys for preschoolers
Preschool superhero play is mostly chasing, rescuing and saving the day, and the best toys keep it simple. The DUPLO Webquarters set lets Spidey stop Rhino's Wrecker vehicle and then take a break at the piano and guitar, so the story has a calm ending as well as a battle.
A big figure is often the toy that gets carried to bed, the car and the park. The Imaginext XL Batman stands about 23 cm tall and needs no batteries, and there is an XL Superman the same size for DC fans who prefer him.
From four, a superhero fan who also loves cars has a Hot Wheels track of their own: Spider-Man's car slam-launches round a loop to knock out three villains, and the Hulk smashes in once they fall. Mattel lists no batteries for it.
Marvel and superhero toys for 3, 4 and 5-year-olds
Between three and five, most superhero fans know their heroes from television rather than the cinema, and they want toys that act out a rescue rather than a fight. Size matters more than detail: a figure they can hold in one hand, or a vehicle they can push along the floor, gets far more play than a model.
For a three-year-old, the Imaginext XL Batman and XL Superman are the easiest choice in this guide. They are marked 3+, stand about 23 cm tall and need no batteries. A Spidey fan of the same age still has the DUPLO Webquarters, marked 2+, with big bricks that will not frustrate them.
Four is where Marvel toys for this age really open up. LEGO's Loki vs. Team Iron Man is marked 4+ and uses the characters from Iron Man and His Awesome Friends, so the story on screen and the set on the table match. The Hot Wheels Spider-Man track is marked 4+ too, and suits a child who loves cars as much as heroes.
A five-year-old Marvel fan is usually ready for both of those 4+ toys, and may start asking for the film heroes as well. Keep the Avengers: Doomsday Quinjet for later: it is marked 9+. The small LEGO Marvel battle sets, marked 6+, are the natural next birthday present.
LEGO Marvel battle sets for 6 to 8
Small battle sets give a child two characters and one reason to fight, which is all a good game needs. The Miles Morales mech is big and fully jointed, so it holds a pose for every round with Spider-Man 2099, and its detachable shooter and web rope keep the battle moving.
Both heroes come from the Spider-Verse films, so the mech joins any Spider-Man figures a child already owns. For an eight-year-old who wants a longer build, the bigger Marvel vehicles on our Christmas superheroes list are the next step before the 9+ film models below.
Film models for 9 and over, including Avengers: Doomsday
Avengers: Doomsday is due in UK cinemas on 18 December 2026, according to the Film Distributors' Association release schedule. LEGO's Quinjet from the film comes with Cyclops, Doctor Doom, The Thing and Captain America, and has an opening cockpit and opening panels to reach inside.
The Batman Batmobile is from the 2022 film and celebrates 20 years of LEGO DC Batman: the roof lifts off for the minifigure, who wears a fabric cape, and a golden anniversary coin sits under the bonnet. Both sets are made to play with and then display.
Shooters and small parts
Several LEGO sets here include stud shooters, which fire small round pieces. LEGO marks its sets with a small parts warning, so keep shooters and loose studs away from children under three, and count the pieces back into the box after play.
We have not listed electronic masks, gauntlets or blasters yet. Their maker pages did not confirm which batteries they use, and we hold back toys that may take button batteries until a person has checked them.
How these superhero toys were chosen
The eight toys come from LEGO and Mattel's Imaginext and Hot Wheels ranges, with no more than three from any one LEGO range. We read each one's age marking and contents on the maker's own site on 6 October 2026, and each is sold by The Entertainer through an Awin link we have checked.
They are set out by age marking, youngest first, which is not a TopTenToys ranking. For more building sets in every theme, see our LEGO guide.
