Best princess toys for kids: Disney Princess dolls, Frozen and LEGO castles by age

Start with the film they love

Ask which film they watch most, or look at the pyjamas. Elsa leads for Frozen fans, Rapunzel for Tangled, Belle for Beauty and the Beast and Moana for both Moana films, and LEGO sets cover Cinderella and Ariel too.

Then choose the kind of play. Dolls are for dressing, caring and acting out stories. Playsets and castles are small worlds to arrange. LEGO sets are built first and played with afterwards, and the bigger ones end up on display.

Princess toys by age: 2, 3, 4 and 6

At two, the LEGO DUPLO Frozen Creative Box has 37 big bricks, Elsa and Olaf figures and a teapot and cup for a tea party. From three, Mattel's Disney dolls and playsets take over: the Storytime Stackers Rapunzel tower, Elsa with her bear cub, the Jewel Reveal Belle and the swimming Moana are all marked 3+.

LEGO Disney sets start at four with the Cinderella castle, which uses larger Starter Bricks and picture instructions. Belle and the Beast's Enchanted Castle is marked 5+, and Ariel's Royal Wedding Boat 6+.

Disney princess toys for 3-year-olds

Three is when most Disney princess fans move from watching the story to playing it out, and the four Mattel toys here are made for that age: each is marked 3+, and Mattel lists no batteries for any of them. Pick by the film first, since a Frozen fan will want Elsa and a Tangled fan will go looking for Rapunzel.

For a three-year-old who likes small worlds, the Storytime Stackers tower is the one to choose: it opens into a little house with furniture and shuts again to carry by the handle. For one who prefers a single doll to look after, Elsa comes with a bear cub to feed and put to bed, and the swimming Moana goes into the bath with them.

Most come with small accessories, such as Elsa's brush and the cub's bowl, so keep track of them if a baby shares the house. A three-year-old who would rather build than dress can start with the DUPLO Frozen box, marked 2+, and move on to the LEGO Disney castles from four.

Princess toys for 4 and 5-year-olds

Four is the age where princess play splits in two. Some four-year-olds still want a doll to dress, bathe and carry everywhere, and every Mattel doll and playset in this guide is marked 3+, so all of them still suit a four-year-old. Others are ready to build, and four is exactly where the LEGO Disney sets begin: the Cinderella castle is marked 4+.

That set is made for a first build. Its 149 pieces come with larger Starter Bricks and picture instructions, and each bag builds one part with one character, so a four-year-old can finish it with a little help and play as they go. For a Disney princess present for a four-year-old who has never built LEGO before, it is a gentle start.

At five, Belle and the Beast's Enchanted Castle opens up: 254 pieces, six rooms and a ballroom floor that spins. A five-year-old who already enjoyed a 4+ set is usually ready for it, and the castle gives the Belle doll somewhere grand to visit.

• Doll lovers at four: Elsa with her bear cub, the Jewel Reveal Belle or the swimming Moana (all 3+).
• First builders at four: the Cinderella castle (4+).
• Five and building already: the Enchanted Castle (5+).

Surprises, water play and moving parts

Several of these toys do something. The Jewel Reveal Belle comes in packaging that opens when the heart-shaped gem on top is unlocked, and the heart then fixes to the base as a gem box for the accessories. The Moana 2 doll kicks her legs when the button at her waist is pressed, and her bodice changes colour in warm water, so she is a bath-time toy as well.

In the LEGO sets, Belle's castle has a spinning ballroom floor and Ariel's boat has an opening upper deck with Vanessa's mirror. Mattel lists no batteries for the dolls and playsets here.

Before you buy

Mattel notes that its fashion dolls cannot stand alone, so a doll stand or a playset helps if your child likes to display them. The small accessories, such as rings, brushes and cups, are easy to lose, so a box or the Jewel Reveal gem box is worth keeping.

The LEGO sets marked 4+ and over have small parts. If a younger brother or sister shares the room, the DUPLO box is the one to leave out for both.

How these princess toys were chosen

The eight toys come from Mattel and LEGO, and no more than three come from any one LEGO range. We read each one's age marking, battery needs and contents on the maker's own site on 6 October 2026, and each is sold by The Entertainer through an Awin link we have checked. We left out sets LEGO's site marked as retiring soon, and a light-up doll whose battery type the maker does not publish.
