Before you choose

A sensory toy is one a child explores with their senses as much as their hands: something to feel, shake, watch, listen to or squish. Every child takes to this kind of play differently. Some love loud, bright toys; others prefer something quiet, soft and predictable. So this guide describes how each of its ten toys looks, sounds and feels, from a playmat for a newborn to a squishy soft toy at three, with the age marking and contents we checked on each maker's own site.

What makes a toy a sensory toy

Almost any toy uses the senses, but some are built around them: a fabric book with crinkly pages, a ball with a mirror in it, a tube of beads that tumble when it is tipped. The point of these toys is the feel, sound or sight of them rather than a game with rules.

That makes them easy to start with. There is no wrong way to play with a rainmaker or a ball pit, so a baby, a toddler and an older brother or sister can all join in at their own level.

  • Touch: textured fabrics, squishy soft toys, sand and water.
  • Sound: crinkles, rattles, chimes, falling beads and music.
  • Sight: high-contrast patterns, mirrors, sequins, lights and bubbles.
  • Movement: things to roll, tip, chase and sit in.

Every child is different

Some families look for sensory toys because their child is autistic, has ADHD or has differences in how they process sound, light or touch. We make no claim that any toy here helps with any condition, and none of them is a therapy. What suits one child can overwhelm another.

Use the descriptions instead. If a child dislikes sudden noise, the quieter toys below may suit them better than the drum; if they love to watch things move, the rainmaker and the bubble machine are the ones to look at. The child's own reactions, and the views of the people who know them best, matter more than any list.

Quiet toys and lively ones

Four of the ten make no sound at all: the wonder cubes, the ball pit, the sand and water table and the soft toy. Four more make small sounds only when a child handles them: the book and the playmat crinkle (the playmat also hides a rattle, a squeaker and a chime), the discovery balls rattle and chime when shaken, and the rainmaker patters softly as its beads fall.

Two are deliberately lively. The Light and Sound Drum plays tunes, beats and silly sounds and flashes colour-changing lights, and the bubble machine runs a fan to blow its bubbles. Both are fun for a child who enjoys a burst of noise and light, and worth trying in short spells with one who does not.

Sensory toys by age: birth to 3 and up

From birth, Mamas & Papas' Another Fox playmat gives a baby black-and-white patterns to look at, soft hanging toys and crinkles, rattles and a squeaker to find. Early Learning Centre's Double Sided Sensory Book, also marked from birth, props up on the floor for tummy time or ties to a cot.

From six months, Early Learning Centre lists its Sensory Wonder Cubes, its Sensory Discovery Balls, its Baby Sensory Ball Pit and its wooden rainmaker. Its Light and Sound Drum is marked from 9 months.

From 18 months, the Pink Sand and Water Table brings messy play outdoors or onto a washable floor, and from three the Flora the Fish Bubble Machine and the Squishmallows Jinu soft toy join the list.

For a child who explores by touch

The wonder cubes have shiny mirrors, holographic panels, sequins to shake and coloured lenses to look through, six cubes in all. The discovery balls add textures to grip, and the ball pit is a soft place to sit among 20 balls, with mesh sides and holes for posting them through.

For a three-year-old who likes something to squeeze, the Jinu Squishmallow is made from very soft material and stands 8 inches tall. Its character comes from the film KPop Demon Hunters, which helps if the child already loves it.

Sand, water and bubbles

The sand and water table has two trays, ten toys including a boat, funnels and spinning wheels, and a lid that doubles as a car track. Sand is sold separately; Early Learning Centre suggests 10 to 20 kg for one side. It also reminds parents never to leave children unattended in or around water.

The bubble machine blows a stream of bubbles from the fish's mouth for a child to watch, chase and pop. It needs bubble mixture, which is not included, and six AA batteries, also not included.

Safety notes before you buy

Mamas & Papas says to take the toy arches off the playmat as soon as a baby starts to push up on hands and knees, at about five months, to use the playmat with adult supervision and never to let a baby sleep on it.

Early Learning Centre's pages give two ages for the rainmaker, 6 months to 3 years and suitable from birth, so we list it from six months. Check the box for the marking on the one you buy, as with every toy here.

How these sensory toys were chosen

The ten toys come from Early Learning Centre, Mamas & Papas and Squishmallows. We read each one's age marking, contents and any warnings on elc.co.uk, mamasandpapas.com and shop.jazwares.com on 24 October 2026, and each pick was checked by a person before this page was published. Mamas & Papas sells its own products through Awin and The Entertainer sells the rest, through links we have checked.

They are set out from the youngest age marking up, and that order is not a TopTenToys ranking. There are no toys for older children here yet; for those, see our guides to creative and craft toys and to STEM toys.

Questions

Common questions

What is a good sensory toy for a newborn?
Two toys here are marked from birth: the Mamas & Papas Another Fox playmat, with black-and-white patterns and hanging toys, and Early Learning Centre's Double Sided Sensory Book, a soft fabric book with crinkly pages and a mirror.
Which sensory toys are quiet?
The wonder cubes, the ball pit, the sand and water table and the Squishmallow make no sound at all. The book and the playmat crinkle, the rainmaker patters softly and the discovery balls rattle and chime, but only when a child handles them.
Are these toys suitable for autistic children?
We do not say any toy is suitable for a particular condition, because children's needs and preferences differ so much. Instead we describe how each toy looks, sounds and feels, so you can match it to what your child enjoys and avoid what they find overwhelming.
Which of these sensory toys need batteries?
Two do: the Light and Sound Drum takes three AA batteries, which Early Learning Centre says are included, and the bubble machine takes six AA batteries, which are not. The bubble machine also needs bubble mixture.
Are these sensory toys ranked?
No. They are listed from the youngest age marking up, which is not a TopTenToys ranking.
