Before you choose

The right jigsaw for a child is mostly a question of piece count. Too few and it is finished before the wrapping paper is cleared away; too many and it goes back in the box half done. This guide sorts ten puzzles by the age the maker marks on each, from four first puzzles of 12 to 24 pieces for a three-year-old to a 500-piece puzzle marked 12+, and we read every age, piece count and finished size on the maker's own site.

How many pieces for each age

Piece count is the first thing to check, because a puzzle that is too hard gets abandoned and one that is too easy gets done once. The makers of the puzzles in this guide put an age on every box, and the piece count climbs steadily from one age to the next.

Treat the markings as a starting point for difficulty. A child who does a puzzle every week can often move up a step early, and one who has never done one may be happier a step lower. For a younger brother or sister, though, go by the marking on the box, not by how clever they are with puzzles.

  • 3+: four puzzles in one box, from 12 to 24 pieces.
  • 5+: three puzzles of 49 pieces.
  • 6+: 100 extra-large pieces, a 72-piece 3D puzzle ball or a 216-piece wooden jigsaw.
  • 8+: 200 extra-large pieces, or a 216-piece 3D model.
  • 9+: 300 extra-large pieces.
  • 12+: 500 standard pieces.

First jigsaws for three and four-year-olds

A box with four puzzles of different sizes is the easiest way in. Ravensburger's 4 in a Box sets hold puzzles of 12, 16, 20 and 24 pieces, so a child can finish the smallest on the first afternoon and work up to the biggest over the following weeks. The Gruffalo set's puzzles measure about 19 by 14 centimetres each, small enough for a lap tray.

Choose the box by the picture they will want to look at. The Gruffalo set shows scenes from the picture book, with the Mouse, Fox, Owl and Snake; the Bluey set comes from the television show. Both are marked 3+.

Under-threes need a different kind of puzzle, with a few chunky pieces and a board to slot them into. We have not listed one yet; the guides to wooden toys and toddler toys cover first toys for that age.

The step up to 49 and 100 pieces

Around five, a box of three 49-piece puzzles is a good next step. The Gabby's Dollhouse set has one puzzle for each of three rooms in the dollhouse, with Mercat, the Garden Fairy and Pillowcat, and each finishes at about 18 centimetres square.

From six, a 100-piece puzzle with extra-large pieces is the usual next box. Ravensburger calls these XXL, and the Mandalorian and Grogu puzzle in this guide is one. It finishes at about 49 by 36 centimetres, which needs a table or a puzzle board rather than a lap.

Bigger puzzles with extra-large pieces

Extra-large pieces stay in the box as the piece count climbs. The Minecraft puzzle has 200 of them and is marked 8+; the KPop Demon Hunters puzzle of Derpy and Sussie has 300 and is marked 9+.

Every XXL puzzle in this guide finishes at about 49 by 36 centimetres, the same size as the 500-piece puzzle further down. The picture stays the same size while the piece count goes up, so each piece in a 100-piece XXL puzzle is about five times the size of one in the 500.

A puzzle of this size takes more than one sitting for most children. A board or a spare tray that can be lifted off the table between sessions saves the half-finished picture from the next meal.

3D puzzles that become something

A 3D puzzle ends as an object rather than a picture, which suits a child who likes building as much as puzzling.

The 3D puzzles here use plastic pieces that slot together without glue, and each piece carries a number on the back, so a child can build by eye or follow the numbers when stuck. The Stitch puzzle ball has 72 pieces, comes with a stand and is marked 6+. The Harry Potter Knight Bus has 216 pieces, is about 31 centimetres long when built and is marked 8+; Ravensburger suggests it as a desk tidy or pencil pot afterwards.

A wooden jigsaw

A wooden jigsaw is a different kind of challenge from a card one. Its pieces are laser-cut from thin wood, and some are cut into novelty shapes, known as whimsy pieces, that look nothing like a usual jigsaw piece.

The Craft Buddy Peacock puzzle has 216 of these pieces and finishes at about 29 by 36 centimetres. Each piece has a code on the back that matches a square on an A3 map in the box, so a child can fill the map piece by piece, or put the map away for a harder puzzle. Craft Buddy marks it for ages 6 and up.

For younger children who like wood, the wooden toys guide has stacking, pushing and building toys from the first year.

A first 500-piece puzzle

A standard 500-piece puzzle is where children's puzzles meet adult ones. The pieces are the usual jigsaw size, and the picture takes most children several sittings.

The Pokémon puzzle in this guide shows every Pokémon from number 1 to 151, so a fan can test themselves on the names once it is done. Ravensburger lists it as a 12+ puzzle, so it suits an older child or a puzzle to share with an adult.

How these jigsaw puzzles were chosen

We read each puzzle's age marking, piece count and finished size on the maker's own site on 6 October 2026: Ravensburger's UK site for nine of them and Craft Buddy's for the wooden puzzle. Each is sold through an Awin link we have checked, by The Entertainer or by Craft Buddy.

The puzzles run from the youngest age marking to the oldest, and that order is not a TopTenToys ranking. For games that ask for the same patience, see our board games guide.

Questions

Common questions

How many pieces should a jigsaw for a 5-year-old have?
Ravensburger marks its set of three 49-piece puzzles in this guide 5+, and its 4 in a Box sets of 12 to 24 pieces 3+. A five-year-old who already does puzzles can try 49 pieces; one who is new to them may enjoy a 4 in a Box first.
What does XXL mean on a jigsaw puzzle?
Ravensburger uses XXL for puzzles with larger pieces. The 100, 200 and 300-piece XXL puzzles in this guide all finish at about 49 by 36 centimetres, the same size as the 500-piece one, so each piece is much bigger.
Are 3D puzzles harder than flat jigsaws?
They are different rather than harder. The pieces are plastic, slot together without glue and are numbered on the back. Ravensburger marks the 72-piece Stitch ball 6+ and the 216-piece Knight Bus 8+.
Are these jigsaw puzzles ranked?
No. They are listed from the youngest age marking to the oldest, and the order is not a TopTenToys ranking.
