Before you choose
Children who love farms want to drive the tractor, look after the animals and run the farm shop, usually all in one afternoon. This guide sorts farm toys by age, from a six-piece Mega Bloks tractor at one to a 685-piece LEGO horse at nine, with a wooden farmyard in the middle. We checked the age marking and contents of all ten on each maker's own site.
Tractors, farmyards and animals
Farm play splits three ways. Tractors are for driving, loading and towing. Farmyards and stables give the animals somewhere to live and the child a small world to arrange. Horse sets carry farm play on into the school years, when building the stable becomes part of the fun.
Most children move between all three, so a tractor this year and a farmyard next year is a common pattern. The age markings below show where each kind starts.
- Tractors: Mega Bloks, TOMY, LEGO DUPLO, Le Toy Van and Bruder, starting from 1+ to 3+.
- Farmyard: Le Toy Van's wooden buildings and movable fences, marked 3+.
- Horses: two LEGO builds for children of seven and nine and over.
Farm toys by age: 1, 2, 3 and older
At one, Mega Bloks' John Deere Lil Tractor offers six pieces, a driver and a tractor to build on. It is the youngest marking in this selection. A block tractor lets the child alternate between making something and driving it, without needing the moving couplings of the older-child models.
Also from 18 months, TOMY's Build-A-Buddy Johnny Tractor comes apart with a toy drill and two bits, then goes back together as a push-along tractor. At two, LEGO DUPLO's Peppa Pig Tractor and Market has 18 pieces, Peppa and Pedro Pony figures and a market stall to stock with carrot, watermelon and jam jar bricks.
From two, Early Learning Centre's Happyland Farm is a whole farm in one box: a farmhouse, a stable, a tractor and trailer, two farmers and six animals, with five sounds. Its chunky figures suit small hands that are not ready for LEGO.
Three brings a choice of wooden farm toys and Bruder tractors with working steering and moving parts. The LEGO horse builds here begin at seven, so keep the ages in mind if the present is for a younger horse fan.
Choosing a Bruder tractor: loader or trailer?
Both Bruder tractors in the shortlist are 1:16 models marked from three years, with steering through the cab roof. That puts the choice mainly in the job the child wants to do. A tipping trailer is for taking a load somewhere and emptying it. A front loader adds scooping to the start of that journey.
The John Deere 6920 with tipping trailer has a bed that lifts and a tailgate that opens as it tips. The 7R 350 with front loader has a slip-on loader, opening doors, an opening bonnet and a rear coupling with adjustable height. Figures are separate, so check the contents if a driver is part of the planned gift.
Look at the variant before comparing two listings. The earlier retailer numbers here are 02057, 03150 and 03151; brudertoys.com uses 09820, 09825 and 09826 for the matched models. Bruder still lists the earlier numbers on bruder.de, so these are cross-site identifiers rather than proof that an older version has been discontinued. Our notes keep the pair together for future parts enquiries.
A 1:16 tractor needs more room than a block-built one. Measure the play area and storage shelf, then decide whether a separate trailer has somewhere to turn. The 7R is about 36 cm long without a loader and about 42.5 cm with it. Keep the small accessories apart from toys used by younger siblings.
A wooden farmyard to build a world around
Le Toy Van's Wooden Farmyard Stables is the centrepiece here: a barn, a stable, a milking parlour, a pigsty and fences that move. Le Toy Van's description lists the buildings and fences but no animals, so check what is in the box if you have none to put in it.
The wooden Farmyard Tractor & Trailer gives that setting a vehicle to load and tow. Before mixing it with a plastic tractor, compare their size in the space where the child plays. A vehicle may suit the story without fitting inside the wooden barn, and a familiar toy animal can be a better addition than another building.
Horse sets for older children
For the horse fan, decide between a setting for stories and a model to pose. A stable brings routines such as saddling, jumping and clearing up into the play. A posable horse puts the animal itself at the centre. Those are different gifts, even if both begin with sorting a bag of LEGO bricks.
From seven, LEGO Friends' Horse Stable and Riding Academy is a bigger build at 735 pieces: two horses to saddle and ride over jumps, a wheelbarrow and hay boxes, and beds above the stables. From nine, LEGO Creator's Beautiful Horse is a 685-piece posable model that can stand or rear up, and it can be rebuilt as a bear or a deer.
Before you buy
Check the age marking against the youngest child who will play with the toy, not just the one it is for. Bruder gives an under-36-month choking warning for both of its tractors here, and the LEGO horse sets contain small pieces. Plan a separate play space when a toddler shares the room.
TOMY says its Johnny Tractor comes with 2 AA batteries already fitted. The Happyland Farm needs 2 AA batteries for its sounds, which are not included. None of the other toys here lists batteries.
How these farm toys were chosen
The ten choices use facts from Mega Bloks, TOMY, LEGO, Le Toy Van, Bruder and Early Learning Centre. The first group was checked on 6 October 2026, the Bruder additions on 10 October and the Happyland Farm, on Early Learning Centre's own site, on 19 October. The tractor notes retain both the retailer's item number and the number used on brudertoys.com, matched through names, scale, features and common spare parts. Le Toy Van sells its own toys through Awin and The Entertainer sells the others, and we have checked each link.
Youngest marking comes first and oldest last. It is not a TopTenToys ranking. For diggers and other working vehicles, see our car toys guide.
