Ask a precise question before choosing
Broad questions such as ‘Do you like LEGO?’ reveal less than asking which teams, players, vehicles, characters or kinds of building they follow. Older children often know the exact edition they want and will notice a near miss.
If the gift is a surprise, ask a parent or friend about recent projects, the sets already owned and available display or storage space. Duplicate components may be welcome in an open system but disappointing in a one-off model.
Match the format to how they like to play
