The bigger Technic build for a child of nine or more who has already finished a small mechanical model. Its 632 pieces make NASA's Artemis rocket, and turning the crank drops away the boosters, then the core stage, then the upper stage, so the launch sequence is something to show rather than explain. Four astronaut nanofigures and an information panel come in the box.

Before you choose
LEGO sells its sets in ranges, and each range is made for a stage of building. This guide explains which range suits which age, what changes as a child moves from DUPLO to standard bricks and then to Technic, and lists ten sets whose age marking, piece count and contents we read on LEGO's own site.
Which LEGO range for which age
Start with the range, then the theme. DUPLO bricks are larger and made for small hands, and the DUPLO sets in this guide are marked from 1½+ to 3+. Standard LEGO sets in themes such as Gabby's Dollhouse, City and Minecraft follow, and the ones here run from 4+ to 7+.
Technic sets build models with working mechanisms, such as steering, a piston engine or a pull-back function. Creator 3 in 1 boxes come with instructions for three different models from the same bricks, so one set gives three builds. Both suit a child who already enjoys following instructions on their own.
- 18 months to 3 years: DUPLO, with big bricks and short builds.
- 4 and 5: a first standard set, small and quick, often with larger starter pieces.
- 6 and over: standard bricks in a theme they already love.
- 7 and over: a first, small Technic model with something that moves.
- 8 and over: larger Creator 3 in 1 builds that come apart into new models.
- 9 and over: a bigger Technic model with several hundred pieces and a working mechanism.
LEGO DUPLO sets for 1, 2 and 3-year-olds
For a first set, a box of mixed bricks gives the most play. The DUPLO Colourful Creative Box has 80 pieces and is marked 1½+, and LEGO's picture ideas include flowers, a whale, a duck, a plane and a rocket. With no single model to finish, it never runs out of things to make.
From two, DUPLO sets start to tell a story. Pizza Girls with Muffin and Bluey (44 pieces, 2+) rebuilds the Heeler backyard as a small scene a toddler can act out, and a Bluey fan will know the episode. At three, the 3 in 1 Creative Ramps with Vehicles has 111 pieces that rebuild into three ramp layouts for its two race cars.
At this age the building is short and the playing is long. Expect an adult to help with the first build, then leave the bricks out where the child can reach them. A set that gets taken apart and rebuilt every day is doing its job.
Moving on to standard LEGO bricks
Between DUPLO and the bigger themed sets sits a small first build. Kitty Fairy's Garden House from LEGO Gabby's Dollhouse is marked 4+ and has 103 pieces, and its large Starter Bricks help small fingers finish the first build quickly. The LEGO City Yellow Taxi is marked 5+ with 122 pieces: the boot opens, the bonnet lifts and the roof comes off so a driver and a tourist can climb in.
The move from DUPLO usually comes with a theme. LEGO City F1 Pit Stop & Pit Crew with Ferrari Car is marked 6+ and has 322 pieces, with a car, a driver and four pit crew minifigures, so a racing fan gets a model and a scene to play out. The Armory from LEGO Minecraft is marked 7+ and builds three areas with Alex and the Armorsmith from the game.
Standard bricks are small, and a dropped piece is easy to lose. Build at a table rather than on the carpet, and keep a lidded box for the pieces. If a brother or sister under three shares the room, pack the bricks away after each session.
LEGO also offers digital instructions in its LEGO Builder app for several of these sets, which lets a child turn the model round in 3D and tick off each step. The printed booklet still does the job; the app simply suits some builders better.
LEGO Technic for 7-year-olds and up
Technic is the range for children who want to know how things work. The Yellow Motorcycle is the smallest step in: 151 pieces, marked 7+, with steering and a 3-piston engine to build.
Technic models go together differently from ordinary brick sets, so the first build can feel slow. A small model like the motorcycle is a better first Technic set than a large car, and an adult nearby for the tricky steps keeps it fun.
The step up from the motorcycle is the NASA Artemis Space Launch System rocket, marked 9+, with 632 pieces and made with NASA and ESA. Turning its crank separates the boosters, then the core stage, then the upper stage in turn, so a child who wants to understand a launch can work through it rather than read about it. Four astronaut nanofigures and an information panel come in the box, and the finished rocket stands up well on a shelf between builds.
A word on The Lego Group and its ranges
The Lego Group splits its sets into ranges rather than selling one kind of brick, which is why the age markings in this guide run from 1½+ to 9+. DUPLO, Gabby's Dollhouse, City, Minecraft, Technic and Creator 3 in 1 all appear here, and each one asks something different of the builder.
UK searches for The Lego Group and for LEGO Technic both climb from the start of November and peak in December. If this is a Christmas present, settling on the range first and the theme second makes the decision easier before the busiest shopping weeks arrive.
- DUPLO: big bricks for small hands, marked here from 1½+ to 3+.
- Gabby's Dollhouse, City and Minecraft: standard bricks in a familiar setting, marked from 4+ to 7+ here.
- Technic: working mechanisms, from a 151-piece motorcycle at 7+ to a 632-piece rocket at 9+.
- Creator 3 in 1: one box of bricks with instructions for three separate models.
Creator 3 in 1: three builds from one box
A Creator 3 in 1 set comes with instructions for three different models made from the same bricks. The Fierce Dinosaur builds a Velociraptor, a Stegosaurus or a Pterosaur from its 283 pieces and is marked 8+, and each version has a posable body and its own skull, eggs and plant.
The value is in the second and third builds. A child who has finished one model now has a reason to take it apart and start again, which is the step many LEGO sets never get past once the first model goes on a shelf.
Choosing a LEGO set as a gift
Piece count is a rough guide to how long a build takes and how much patience it needs. A 44-piece DUPLO set is a quick build; a set with 250 to 350 pieces can fill an afternoon for a child of seven or eight. Match it to the child's attention span as well as their age.
- Follow the age marking on the box, and treat it as the youngest age the set suits.
- Pick a theme the child already loves: vehicles, dinosaurs, a TV show or a game.
- Check how many pieces there are against how long they usually build for.
- Plan where the finished model and the spare bricks will live.
How these LEGO sets were chosen
The ten sets cover DUPLO, Gabby's Dollhouse, City, Minecraft, Technic and Creator, and no more than three come from any one range, so the list shows the choice rather than one shelf of it. We read each one's age marking, piece count and contents on LEGO's own site between 5 and 17 October 2026, and each is sold by The Entertainer through an Awin link we have checked. Sets LEGO designs for adults, such as display models, are left out on purpose.
The list starts with the youngest age marking and works up, and that order is not a TopTenToys ranking. For other building toys, including wooden blocks and magnetic tiles, see our construction toys guide.

Questions
Common questions
- What is a good LEGO set for a 2-year-old?
- Choose LEGO DUPLO. In this guide, Pizza Girls with Muffin and Bluey is marked 2+, and the Colourful Creative Box, marked 1½+, is a box of mixed bricks for free building.
- What age is LEGO DUPLO for?
- The DUPLO sets in this guide are marked from 1½+ (18 months) to 3+. The standard LEGO sets here start at 4+, so most children move across somewhere between those two markings.
- What LEGO set suits a 4 or 5-year-old?
- A small standard set in a theme they know. Kitty Fairy's Garden House (LEGO Gabby's Dollhouse, 103 pieces) is marked 4+ and uses large Starter Bricks, and the LEGO City Yellow Taxi (122 pieces) is marked 5+.
- What age is LEGO Technic for?
- It depends on the model. The Yellow Motorcycle here is marked 7+, while the larger NASA Artemis Space Launch System rocket, at 632 pieces, is marked 9+. Bigger Technic models carry older markings again, so read the box before buying.
- What does LEGO Creator 3 in 1 mean?
- Each Creator 3 in 1 set includes instructions for three different models built from the same bricks. The Fierce Dinosaur in this guide builds a Velociraptor, a Stegosaurus or a Pterosaur.
- Are these LEGO sets ranked?
- No. The ten sets are editorial picks arranged by LEGO's age marking, youngest first, rather than a TopTenToys ranking.
