Before you choose
A good wooden toy is simple to start, sturdy enough to share and open enough to play with in more than one way. This guide covers what to look for at each age, how to read the material claims on the box, and ten wooden toys from six makers whose age marking and contents we checked on each maker's own site.
What wooden toys do well
Most good wooden toys do one thing clearly: stack, roll, post, push, build or stand in for something real. That simplicity leaves the story to the child, and a sturdy toy can move from one child to the next.
Wood is not automatically better than other materials. A wooden toy still has to fit the child's age, stage and interests, and it needs the same safety checks as any other toy. Treat the material as one reason to choose, not the only one.
- Look for one clear first action a child can start without help.
- Check that it can be played with in more than one way.
- Think about weight and size for the youngest child in the house.
- Start with the maker's age marking, then weigh everything else.
Wooden toys for 1, 2 and 3-year-olds and up
For one-year-olds, look for toys the manufacturer marks 12 months+. In this guide that is the Woodland Activity Baby Walker, the PlanToys First Stacking Ring and the Small Foot Rainbow XL arches: something to walk behind, and simple pieces to stack, nest and knock down.
From 18 months+, the markings in this guide include the Counting Wooden Numbers Shape Sorter and the BRIO My First Railway Beginner Pack. They ask for a little more control, such as fitting a number into its own space or guiding a train onto a track. At two, the Melissa & Doug Shape Sorting Cube (marked 2+) joins them.
From three, the markings open up to larger sets: a play kitchen, a dolls house, a puppet theatre and the Bigjigs Rail Figure of Eight Train Set. These tend to become the main play space in a room, so check the measurements before buying.
Wooden puzzles and building blocks
Wooden puzzles for toddlers are usually inset boards or shape sorters with a few chunky pieces. The Counting Wooden Numbers Shape Sorter has nine numbered pieces on a board with counting dots and is marked 18 months+. The Melissa & Doug Shape Sorting Cube has twelve chunky shapes and is marked 2+.
Building blocks are the most open-ended wooden toy there is. A plain set leaves every shape to the builder, and rainbow arches such as the Small Foot Rainbow XL add curves that become tunnels, bridges and ramps. For older builders, our construction guide compares brick systems and magnetic tiles.
Wooden train sets: a first railway or a full layout
A wooden railway is one of the few toys that can be added to for years. Start with the child's age and the space on the floor, then choose a set that works on its own and can grow.
The BRIO My First Railway Beginner Pack is marked 18 months+ and made for toddlers: 18 pieces including guiding ramp tracks that help a small child get the train onto the rails, and a rattle carriage. BRIO states the train and carriage join with magnets. The Bigjigs Rail Figure of Eight Train Set is marked 3+ and gives a bigger layout, about 102 x 46 cm, with two engines, 15 track pieces and a viaduct.
How to read the claims on the box
Makers often describe the timber, the finish and the testing. Le Toy Van, for example, states that its toys in this guide are made from FSC-certified wood and decorated with water-based, non-toxic paints, and BRIO and Bigjigs describe their wood as FSC-certified too. FSC labels are about how the forest material was sourced. They are not a safety rating.
In Great Britain, a toy has to meet the Toys (Safety) Regulations 2011 whatever it is made of. Use the age marking and any warning on the packaging as your safety guide, and check who is selling the item if you buy through a marketplace.
Before you buy a large wooden set
The manufacturer states that several of the larger toys here need self-assembly: the Rattan Family Wooden Play Kitchen, Sophie's Wooden Dolls House, the Tabletop Puppet Wooden Theatre and the Woodland Activity Baby Walker. Build them before the day they are given.
Check the measurements and what is in the box. Le Toy Van lists the play kitchen at about 84 x 35 x 81 cm, and states that the dolls house comes without dolls or furniture. Puppets are not listed in the puppet theatre's contents.
How these wooden toys were chosen
The ten picks come from six makers: Le Toy Van, BRIO, Bigjigs Rail, Melissa & Doug, PlanToys and Small Foot. Each is here because we could read its age marking and contents on the maker's own site on 29 September 2026, and because it has a working purchasing route: Awin for Le Toy Van, Amazon UK for the others.
The picks are listed youngest age marking first and are not a TopTenToys ranking. Commercial relationships do not decide which products appear. Other makers will be added when their products pass the same checks.

Questions
Common questions
- What are good wooden toys for a 1-year-old?
- Choose toys the manufacturer marks 12 months+, such as a push-along walker, a first stacker or a set of simple blocks. In this guide that is the Woodland Activity Baby Walker, the PlanToys First Stacking Ring and the Small Foot Rainbow XL. Check the packaging for the current marking.
- What is a good first wooden train set?
- Match the set to the child's age. The BRIO My First Railway Beginner Pack is marked 18 months+ and has guiding ramp tracks for toddlers; the Bigjigs Rail Figure of Eight Train Set is marked 3+ and gives a larger layout with two engines. BRIO states its set works with the wider BRIO World railway, so it can grow with more track later.
- Are wooden toys safer than plastic toys?
- Not automatically. In Great Britain every toy has to meet the same toy safety regulations whatever it is made of. Follow the manufacturer's age marking and warnings, and buy from a seller you can identify.
- What does FSC-certified wood mean?
- It means the wood is covered by the Forest Stewardship Council's certification, which is about responsible forest sourcing. It is not a safety test, so still check the age marking and any warnings.
- Do wooden toys need assembly?
- Many larger ones do. Le Toy Van states that the play kitchen, dolls house, puppet theatre and activity walker in this guide need self-assembly, so build them before they are given.
- Are these wooden toys ranked?
- No. They are editorial picks listed by age marking, not a TopTenToys ranking.
