Before you choose
Dinosaur fans tend to want one of three things on Christmas morning: a dinosaur that fights back, one to build, or one that gets in the way of their cars. These ten gifts cover all three, from a wooden stacking set marked from 18 months to a LEGO Creator set marked 8+. Six of them are not in our year-round dinosaur guide, so the two lists work together.
Which kind of dinosaur fan?
Most of the gifts here are marked 4+, which is where Jurassic World action figures and Hot Wheels City tracks begin. Younger children have a wooden stacker and a MEGA BLOKS T. rex; older ones have two building sets with more pieces and a motor.
If you are not sure which way your child leans, watch what they do with the dinosaurs they already have. A child who stages fights will want the figures, one who lines them up beside the cars will want a track, and one who takes things apart will want a build.
Dinosaurs that fight back
Mattel's Gigantic Thrashers move when a button is pressed. The Torvosaurus chomps from side to side and swings its tail, and the Liopleurodon chomps and paddles its fins, and on both the back spikes rise. Mattel says neither needs batteries.
The Distortus rex from Jurassic World Rebirth rumbles its head, roars and chomps, and swipes its upper body from side to side. It takes 3 AA batteries. Each of the three carries a code for a digital version in Mattel's free Jurassic World Play app, which needs a compatible phone or tablet.
Dinosaurs in the way of the cars
For children who love cars as much as dinosaurs, Hot Wheels City puts a T. rex in the path of the track. In T-Rex Blaze Battle a launched car gets eaten, stops to refuel or beats the dinosaur, and every pass makes its eyes spin and arms shake until it falls.
The Ultimate T-Rex Garage is far bigger: the T. rex waits at the gate and swallows the cars, pulling its tail lifts them to the top floor, and only one route leads to the loop that knocks it out. It comes with two cars and stores more than 50, so it suits a child who already has a box of them. Mattel says neither set needs batteries.
Dinosaurs to build
Building a dinosaur suits a child who likes to know how something fits together. LEGO Jurassic World's Young T. rex Transport Truck is a 115-piece first set marked 4+, with a cage to load the dinosaur into. The MEGA BLOKS T. rex, marked 3+, uses big blocks and rebuilds into a pterodactyl or a dragon.
For older builders, K'NEX Dynamic Dinos (7+) adds a motor so each of its six dinosaurs moves, and LEGO Creator's Fierce Dinosaur (8+) has 283 pieces for a Velociraptor, a Stegosaurus or a Pterosaur. Neither is a quick build, which makes them good for the quiet days after Christmas.
Before you wrap them
The figures and sets marked 4+ and over contain small parts, so keep them away from younger brothers and sisters. The Distortus rex takes 3 AA batteries and the K'NEX set has a battery-powered motor, so check both boxes and buy the batteries before the day.
How we chose these dinosaur gifts
We read the age marking, battery needs and contents of each gift on its maker's own site between 5 and 6 October 2026: Mattel's for Hot Wheels, Jurassic World and MEGA BLOKS, and LEGO's, Basic Fun's (for K'NEX) and Le Toy Van's. Two Jurassic World dinosaurs that take LR44 button cells were left out, and so was a LEGO fossil model that LEGO marks 18+.
Le Toy Van sells its stacker through Awin and The Entertainer sells the rest, through links we have checked. Apart from running from the youngest age marking up, the gifts are in no particular order.
