What matters most from three to five
Start with the individual child rather than a generic milestone list. Notice whether they currently enjoy drawing, sorting, pretend play, movement, stories or playing alongside other people. A familiar interest reduces the amount of adult persuasion needed before play begins.

Use the age marking as a safety check
UK safety guidance says age restrictions can reflect hazards such as choking, so they are not merely a difficulty rating. Read the warnings, examine small parts and battery compartments, and confirm who actually supplies a marketplace item.
