Before you choose
An outdoor toy is usually the biggest box of the year, so the questions come before the gift: will it fit, how long does it take to build, and is it right for their age? This guide answers them for ten garden toys, from a sand and water table marked from 18 months to a 12ft trampoline marked 6+. We read every age marking, size, weight limit and warning on the maker's own site, and we say where a maker asks for clear space, supervision or two adults to build.
Measure the garden before you choose
Start with a tape measure, not a catalogue. The footprint printed on the box is only part of the space a garden toy needs, because swings move and children jump off trampolines and seesaws at every angle.
Plum asks for a two-metre safety space all round its Bush Baby swing and its 4ft junior trampoline. Add that to the trampoline's 1.22-metre frame and it needs a patch of garden about 5.2 metres across. TP's seesaw turns a full circle as well as rocking, so it needs its whole 160-centimetre play circle clear. TP's 12ft trampoline has a footprint of 365 centimetres before any space around it.
Choose level ground away from fences, walls, washing lines and low branches. Grass is kinder to land on than paving, and the seesaw comes with ground stakes that need soil to hold.
Outdoor toys for toddlers: sand, water and a first ride
From about 18 months the best garden toys are low to the ground and messy. Plum's Build and Splash table holds sand or water at a toddler's standing height, about 54 centimetres tall overall, so they can pour and dig without sitting in it. Plum marks it from 18 months, recommends adult supervision at all times and says to cover it when play is over. The box holds the table and its cover; buy washed play sand made for children's sandpits to go in it.
Micro's Ride-on Space Hopper is two toys in one: an inflatable hopper for bouncing, and a ride-on once the hopper clips onto its wheeled base. Micro marks it for 18 months to 3 years and up to 25 kilograms, and the air can be let out to pack it in the car. It works indoors as well, which helps on wet days.
At two, a sandpit is the classic step up. TP's lidded sandpit is a metre by 90 centimetres, big enough for two children to dig side by side, and its lid lifts off to become two bench seats. TP marks it from 2 years.
Three to five: swings, seesaws and a first trampoline
Three is the age most garden equipment is marked for, and the choice widens fast. A single swing is the simplest. Plum's Bush Baby frame is about 2.1 metres high with a seat on ropes that can be raised as the child grows, a 50-kilogram limit and a 3+ marking. It arrives in four boxes and needs adult assembly.
A seesaw needs a second child, so it suits a family with siblings or friends who visit often. TP's Forest seesaw rocks up and down and also spins round a full circle, takes up to 35 kilograms a seat and is marked 3+. TP estimates an hour's build for two adults.
A small trampoline with a net gives a three-year-old somewhere safe to bounce. Plum's 4ft junior trampoline has an enclosure net all round, a galvanised steel frame and a 3+ marking, and Plum says it is for outdoor use only, under adult supervision at all times.
For a child who would rather cook than climb, TP's deluxe mud kitchen has a water butt with a real tap, a removable splash tub, an oven with a door, a blackboard and a set of stainless-steel pans. It is marked 3+ and has room for up to three children at once.
Balance bikes and scooters: sizing and helmets
A balance bike teaches the hard part of cycling, staying upright, before pedals are added. Micro's Balance Bike Lite has a magnesium frame and weighs 2.6 kilograms, light enough for a parent to carry home when little legs give up. It is marked for ages 2 to 5, up to 30 kilograms, with a saddle and handlebars that both adjust.
Size a balance bike by leg length rather than age. Micro suggests measuring the child's inside leg and checking it against the saddle's lowest and highest settings before you buy, so their feet can rest flat on the ground when seated.
From five, a stunt scooter is the usual next step for a child who has outgrown a three-wheeler. Micro's Chilli Base has an aluminium deck, a fixed bar and 110-millimetre wheels, and Micro describes it as ideal for ages 5 to 9, with a 100-kilogram rider limit. It is built for the skatepark as well as the school run.
Whatever the wheels, budget for a helmet in the same order. A helmet that fits now matters more than one to grow into, so check the size range against their head measurement.
Trampolines: which size for which age
Trampolines are marked by size as much as by age. The two in this guide show the gap: Plum's 4ft junior trampoline is marked 3+, and TP's 12ft UP trampoline is marked 6+ with a 150-kilogram maximum weight.
The 12ft model has a full safety enclosure, pads over the springs and TP's zip-free Igloo door, which TP says cannot be left open and does not catch on clothes. TP sells a cover, a ladder and an anchor-down kit separately. In an exposed garden, plan for the anchor kit, and keep the ladder away from the trampoline when nobody is using it.
Neither maker's age marking replaces supervision. Plum asks for an adult to watch every session on its junior trampoline.
Giving a garden toy at Christmas
A big outdoor toy needs a plan for the 25th. Most arrive flat-packed by courier, often in several boxes, so check where they can be hidden and whether a car can carry them.
Build before the day if you can. The TP seesaw, sandpit and mud kitchen each take about an hour by TP's estimate, but December daylight is short and garden ground is often wet. A trampoline or swing frame built on a dry weekend in early December can wait under a cover, with a photo or the swing seat wrapped for the morning itself.
Smaller pieces make good stand-ins under the tree: the space hopper and the balance bike both fit in a car boot in their boxes.
Looking after outdoor toys through the year
TP pressure-treats its wood, and says that means no need to stain it every year unless you want a different colour. Its sandpit lid keeps out leaves and animals between sessions; Plum gives the same advice for its sand table and asks for the sand to be checked regularly for sharp objects.
Check bolts, ropes and nets at the start of each season and after storms. A trampoline net or swing rope that has frayed over winter is worth replacing before the first warm weekend.
How these outdoor toys were chosen
We read each toy's age marking, size, weight limit and warnings on its maker's site on 16 and 17 October 2026: plumplay.co.uk, tptoys.com and micro-scooters.co.uk. Each listing was matched to the maker's page by its barcode, or for the 12ft trampoline by TP's item number, 62P. The Entertainer sells every one of them, and we checked each buying link through Awin before listing it.
We left out electric scooters and ride-ons, light-up scooters whose maker does not say what powers the lights, and a Plum toddler trampoline that Plum marks for indoor use only. Football goals wait until their makers publish age markings.
The toys are listed from the youngest age marking to the oldest. That order is not a TopTenToys ranking.

Questions
Common questions
- What age is a trampoline suitable for?
- It depends on the size. Plum marks its 4ft junior trampoline with an enclosure from 3 years, and TP marks its 12ft UP trampoline from 6. Plum says its junior trampoline is for outdoor use only and asks for adult supervision at all times.
- What age is a balance bike for?
- Micro marks its Balance Bike Lite for ages 2 to 5 and riders up to 30 kilograms. Check the saddle height against the child's inside leg, so both feet reach the ground when they sit.
- Can a 3-year-old use a seesaw?
- TP marks its Forest wooden seesaw from 3 years, with a maximum of 35 kilograms a seat. It needs a second child of a similar weight to balance well.
- What sand should go in a children's sandpit?
- Plum asks for washed play sand that is sold for children's sandpits, checked regularly for anything sharp, and covered when play is over. Neither sandpit nor sand table in this guide comes with sand.
- How much space does a garden swing need?
- Plum asks for two metres of clear space all round its Bush Baby swing, whose frame is about 2 metres long and 1.7 metres wide. That means a clear area of roughly 6 by 5.7 metres.
- Are these outdoor toys ranked?
- No. They run from the youngest age marking to the oldest, which is not a TopTenToys ranking.
