Nine-year-olds often know exactly what they like. A toy that fits a real interest, a car they admire, a film they love, a game that fills an evening, will be used for months. This guide covers what tends to suit nine-year-olds, and ten toys marked 8+ or 9+, checked with each maker.

What nine-year-olds look for

Nine is where LEGO's 9+ sets begin: models made to look good on a shelf as much as to play with, such as Speed Champions cars and Botanicals flowers. Many nine-year-olds like that grown-up feel.

Games can be longer and deeper too. Scotland Yard can take an hour, and nine-year-olds are often ready to plan a whole route across a board rather than a single move.

LEGO for 9-year-olds

The LEGO Speed Champions Ken Block Hoonicorn and the LEGO DC The Batman Batmobile are both 9+ cars with a minifigure, at 345 and 330 pieces. The LEGO Creator Beautiful Horse is a bigger build at 685 pieces and rebuilds into a bear or a deer.

LEGO Botanicals Happy Plants builds two plants in pots that swap around. LEGO Star Wars Darth Vader's TIE Fighter comes with a SMART Brick and charger; LEGO lists about 45 minutes per charge and warns that its flashes may trigger epilepsy in sensitised people. The LEGO Minecraft Chicken Jockey builds a posable chicken with a baby zombie rider.

Board games for 9-year-olds

Ticket to Ride: London is a short route-building game for two to four players, at about 10 to 15 minutes. Monopoly is the classic long game for two to six. Scotland Yard, for two to four, has one player hiding across London while the rest try to track them down, and a game takes 45 to 60 minutes.

Puzzles and quieter play

Ravensburger's KPop Demon Hunters XXL puzzle has 300 extra-large pieces showing Derpy and Sussie, finishing at about 49 by 36 cm. Bigger pieces make a 300-piece puzzle easier to handle, which suits a first big jigsaw. Clear a table it can stay on for a few days, because a puzzle this size is rarely finished in one sitting, and coming back to it is part of the pleasure.

Choosing for a nine-year-old

Look at the shelf in their room: the sets they display tell you more than any list. A nine-year-old who keeps Speed Champions cars lined up will want another; one with a jigsaw half finished on the floor may want a bigger puzzle.
