Twelve-year-olds sit between childhood and the teenage years, and their wish lists show it. Some still love LEGO; others want something to impress their friends. The toys that work at twelve take skill, look grown-up and connect to a real interest. Here are nine picks marked 8+ to 12+, each checked with its maker, and how to choose between them.

What works at twelve

At twelve, presents that look like toys can miss. Display models, larger jigsaws and strategy games tend to land better, because they look like things adults do for fun too.

Interests run deep by now. A child into Formula 1 knows the cars; a Minecraft player knows every mob. Choose a set from their world and it will be appreciated, even by a twelve-year-old who claims to be past toys.

LEGO for 12-year-olds

Three LEGO Speed Champions cars cover the motor-racing fan: the McLaren W1 with its adjustable rear wing, the Ferrari SF90 XX Stradale and the Ferrari SF-24 Formula 1 car, each with a driver minifigure. Lined up together, they make a small display.

The LEGO Minecraft Ghast Station is the biggest set here at 754 pieces, with a waterfall cave and a whole family of ghasts. The LEGO Marvel Avengers Doomsday Quinjet has four minifigures, Doctor Doom among them, and the film reaches UK cinemas on 18 December 2026; our upcoming toy releases calendar lists it with other launches. LEGO Botanicals Rocking Plants builds two potted plants for a bedroom shelf.

Puzzles and games for 12-year-olds

Ravensburger's Pokémon puzzle has 500 pieces showing every Pokémon from #001 to #151, and it is the only toy here marked 12+. For games, Scotland Yard takes 45 to 60 minutes for two to four players, and Trivial Pursuit Family Edition has separate adult and child cards, so players of different ages each get questions at their level.

Beyond the toy shop

Not every twelve-year-old wants a toy, and that is fine. Hobby kit, books, sports equipment and days out all make good presents at this age. If they do still build and play, the picks here sit in the middle ground: grown-up enough for twelve, and still fun.
