Eleven is the year of the move to secondary school, and many children start to feel too old for anything that looks like a toy. The presents that land well now look like hobbies: a supercar model, a dragon to display, a card game for friends. This guide covers what tends to suit eleven-year-olds, and ten picks marked 8+ to 10+.

Toys that still work at eleven

By eleven, the line between toy and hobby wears thin. LEGO Technic, Speed Champions and Botanicals are all marked 9+, and their finished models are made to be displayed, so they suit an eleven-year-old who wants something more grown-up.

Games are a good way to stay connected. Card games such as Monopoly Deal Strategy and classics such as Cluedo work at a family table and at a sleepover alike.

Builds for 11-year-olds

The LEGO Technic Bugatti Chiron Pur Sport has 771 pieces, a W16 engine, opening doors and a code for the car in the Asphalt Legends game. The LEGO Minecraft Ender Dragon builds a posable dragon over an exit portal, with a crank that flaps its wings.

For film fans, the LEGO Speed Champions Back to the Future Time Machine comes with Doc Brown and Marty McFly, the LEGO DC Batman v Superman Batmobile with an armoured Batman, and LEGO Marvel's Hulkbuster vs. The Hulk with a fully jointed Hulkbuster. LEGO Botanicals Cosmos Flowers is the quieter choice: three cosmos and two stems of fountain grass.

Games and brain teasers

Cluedo, for two to six players, and Ticket to Ride: London, for two to four, are both marked 8+ but have plenty to offer an eleven-year-old. Monopoly Deal Strategy is a 110-card game for two to five players.

ThinkFun's Gravity Maze is a solo challenge: 60 cards, each a marble path to build from towers, which gives an eleven-year-old plenty to work through alone.

Presents around the move to secondary school

The first terms of Year 7 bring new friends and longer days, and quiet hobbies at home help. A model to build over a few evenings, or a puzzle to solve alone, can be a welcome break from a screen. It also gives a child something to talk about with new classmates who share the same interest, which matters more than usual in that first year.
