Before you choose

At four, many children are ready for toys with a goal: a model to finish, a word to spell, a race to win. They still pretend constantly, but now the pretending has plots. This guide covers what tends to suit four-year-olds, and ten toys marked 3+ or 4+ whose age markings and contents we checked with each maker.

What four-year-olds enjoy

Four-year-olds like to make things that last. A bead picture, a finished LEGO model or a puppet show for the family gives them something to point at and say they made it. Toys with a clear end result are a good fit, as long as each step is short.

Stories matter more than ever. Superheroes, vets, fairies and racing cars all turn up in play, and a toy that gives a child a part in the story will be used for longer than one that only does a trick.

  • Making something to keep or show
  • First LEGO sets with large starter pieces
  • Letters, words and early counting games
  • Racing, launching and crashing cars
  • Shows, puppets and dressing up

First LEGO sets at four

Four is where LEGO's own 4+ sets begin. They use large Starter Bricks or quick-start pieces, so a model comes together quickly and the play can start. The LEGO Gabby's Dollhouse Kitty Fairy's Garden House has 103 pieces and the LEGO Friends Animal Vet Clinic 141, with animals to care for once the building is done.

Build alongside a four-year-old the first time. Most can follow the picture instructions with some help, and finishing it together is part of the present.

Crafts, words and puzzles

Aquabeads Beginners Craft Studio uses beads that stick together with a spray of water, so no iron is involved. Crayola's Pastel SuperTips are washable markers for colouring and patterns. Both suit a four-year-old who can settle at a table for a while.

For early reading, Orchard Toys' Match and Spell has picture boards and letter cards that build three- and four-letter words, for one to four players. The Ravensburger Bluey 4-in-1 Puzzle runs from 12 to 24 pieces for a fan who likes jigsaws.

Action toys and storytelling

Hot Wheels Dino Launcher fires cars through a T. rex's jaws when its tail is lifted, and the Disney Cars Piston Cup Stunting Speedway sends a tongue-out Lightning McQueen round a stunt track. Neither needs batteries.

The Imaginext Superman XL stands about 23 cm tall, a size a four-year-old can hold and fly round the room. Le Toy Van's Tabletop Puppet Wooden Theatre gives shows a stage with curtains and a ticket window, but puppets are not included, so check there are some at home.

Toys for the Reception year

Many four-year-olds start Reception in September, and after-school tiredness is real. Toys they can play with quietly, such as colouring, beads or a jigsaw, often suit those first terms better than anything loud.

When they turn five, our most popular toys for 5-year-olds takes over, and the 3 to 5 guide covers the preschool years in one place.

Questions

Common questions

What are the best toys for a 4-year-old?
A first LEGO set such as the Gabby's Dollhouse Kitty Fairy's Garden House, a craft kit like Aquabeads, and a game the family can play together, such as Orchard Toys' Match and Spell, cover the main kinds of play at four.
Is a 4-year-old old enough for LEGO?
LEGO makes 4+ sets with larger starter pieces for exactly this age, and both LEGO sets in this guide are marked 4+. Younger children are better off with LEGO DUPLO.
What educational toys suit a 4-year-old?
Games that play with letters and numbers work well if they stay fun. Orchard Toys' Match and Spell builds three- and four-letter words from picture boards, and a jigsaw asks for patience and a careful look at shapes.
Do any of these toys need batteries?
None of the ten needs batteries, including the Hot Wheels Dino Launcher and the Disney Cars speedway, which are powered by little hands alone.
