Before you choose

Three is the age of the long, detailed pretend game. A three-year-old will run a shop, treat a poorly teddy and cook a feast in a mud kitchen, often all before lunch. This guide looks at what tends to suit the year between three and four, and ten toys whose age marking and contents we checked with each maker, every one of them marked 3+.

What three-year-olds love

Role play gets bigger and more organised at three. Children take on a part and keep it, hand out parts to everyone else, and use props to make the story feel real. A till, a stethoscope or a saucepan can carry a whole afternoon.

This is also when first proper games start to work. A short game with simple turns and a clear end, such as matching items to a shopping list, lets a three-year-old play with adults and older children on fair terms.

First games and puzzles at three

Orchard Toys' Shopping List Game is a long-standing first game for two to four players: fill your trolley from your list before anyone else. The Ravensburger Gruffalo 4 in a Box steps up from 12 pieces to 24 across four puzzles, so the challenge grows with the child.

Expect to bend the rules at first. At three, finishing the game matters more than winning it, and a game that ends happily is the one that gets asked for again.

Role-play toys for 3-year-olds

For shop games, Le Toy Van's Groceries Set & Scanner has a basket, more than a dozen wooden groceries and a play barcode scanner. The Vintage Doctor kit packs nine wooden instruments into a fabric bag, ready for a teddy-bear hospital.

Play-Doh's Hair Stylin' Salon mixes role play with modelling: dough hair to cut, crimp and style with the tools in the box. The TP Deluxe Wooden Mud Kitchen takes cooking outdoors, with a tap fed by a refillable water butt and room for up to three children.

Characters, vehicles and music

A favourite character keeps a three-year-old playing longer. Marshall's Fire Engine from PAW Patrol has a movable ladder and a Marshall figure that clips into the seat, and Thomas & Friends Cranky's Dockside Delivery has a motorised Thomas carry a crate that Cranky the Crane lifts aboard.

VTech's Switch and Go Hero the Triceratops is a dinosaur that becomes a fire engine, with lights and sounds. It launches a small projectile, and VTech warns against aiming it at eyes or faces. For music, Le Toy Van's Wooden Grand Piano comes with nursery-rhyme sheets.

Buying for a three-year-old

Every toy here is marked 3+, which matters if a baby or toddler lives in the house too: a 3+ toy can contain small parts that are not suitable for under-threes. Keep these on a higher shelf when the younger child is about.
