Before you choose

Two-year-olds want to do it themselves, usually right now. The toys that last at this age give them something real to manage, a tractor to take apart, a train to push, dough to squash, while staying simple enough that frustration does not win. Here is what tends to work between two and three, and ten toys whose age marking and contents we checked with each maker.

What changes at two

Pretend play arrives in earnest. A two-year-old will feed a teddy, drive a figure to the shops and pour a cup of tea from an empty pot, and toys with a familiar character or a familiar job, farmer, train driver, builder, feed that straight away.

Bodies get busier too. Running, climbing and riding improve quickly, which is why ride-ons and garden toys turn up on so many second-birthday lists. Indoors, hands are ready for squashing, painting and fitting pieces together with more control.

  • Copying grown-up jobs: cooking, driving, building, shopping
  • Favourite characters from books and television
  • Messy play with dough, water and paint
  • Climbing, riding and balancing
  • Taking things apart and putting them back together

Choosing for a two-year-old

Every toy in this guide is marked 2+ or younger by its maker. Four are marked from 18 months, which makes them easy choices for a child who has only just turned two. The other six, marked 2+, include both DUPLO sets and the balance bike.

Messy toys are worth the clean-up, but choose the mess you can live with. The Magic Water Painting kit uses only water, so it dries to nothing. Play-Doh contains wheat, so skip it for a child with a wheat allergy, and expect a little of it to end up in the carpet.

Toys for 2-year-olds by kind of play

For vehicles, the BRIO My First Railway Beginner Pack is a first wooden train set with ramps and a bridge, the Giant Whistling Thomas is big enough to push across the floor and toots when its dome is pressed, and the TOMY Build-A-Johnny Tractor comes apart with a toy drill.

For building and stories, the two LEGO DUPLO sets put favourite characters in charge: Peppa Pig with a tractor and a market stall, and Bluey's backyard with its swing and mud pizza. The Le Toy Van Jurassic Stacking Dinosaurs stack up one way and show fossils the other.

For making things, there is the Play-Doh 8-Pack and the Craft Buddy water painting kit. For the garden, the Micro Balance Bike Lite and the TP Wooden Lid Sandpit, whose lid folds out into two benches.

Outdoor toys at two

A balance bike suits a two-year-old who is steady on their feet. Micro's Lite model weighs 2.6 kg and its saddle and handlebars adjust, so it can grow with a child until about five. Buy a helmet at the same time.

A sandpit is a bigger commitment. TP's measures about 100 by 90 cm, takes around an hour to assemble and needs play sand bought separately. Its lid covers the sand between sessions.

Keeping toys manageable at two

Two-year-olds tend to play with whatever is out, so fewer toys at once often means longer, calmer play. Swapping a few toys in from a cupboard every week or two can make old favourites feel new.

When the next birthday comes round, our guide to toys for 3-year-olds moves on to games, role play and puzzles, and the toddler guide covers ages one and two together.

Questions

Common questions

What are the best toys for a 2-year-old?
Toys that match what they already love doing. For a vehicle fan, the BRIO My First Railway or the Giant Whistling Thomas; for a builder, a LEGO DUPLO set; for an active child, the Micro Balance Bike Lite. All are marked 2+ or younger.
What do 2-year-olds play with most?
Pretend play with everyday jobs, vehicles of every kind, messy materials such as dough and water, and anything they can climb on or ride. A favourite character makes all of these more appealing.
Is a balance bike a good present for a 2-year-old?
For a child who walks and runs confidently, often yes. Micro marks its Balance Bike Lite for ages 2 to 5, with a maximum rider weight of 30 kg. Buy a helmet with it.
Is Play-Doh suitable for a 2-year-old?
Hasbro marks the 8-Pack 2+. It contains wheat and is not meant to be eaten, so stay close during play and keep it away from a child with a wheat allergy.
