Before you choose
Seven-year-olds can stick at something. A game can last half an hour, a build can run over two evenings, and a set of rules can be argued about in great detail. That opens up a much wider range of toys than a year ago. This guide covers what tends to suit seven-year-olds, and ten toys marked between 5+ and 7+ by their makers.
What changes at seven
By seven, many children read well enough to follow a game's rules and a build's instructions with little help. They start to plan a move or two ahead, which is why strategy games such as Battleship suddenly become fun rather than frustrating.
They also like knowing how things work. A model with working steering, a motor that makes a dinosaur move or a robot that follows a sequence of commands all reward that curiosity.
- Strategy and guessing games for two players
- Builds with moving parts and motors
- Coding and logic without a screen
- Card games with a twist
- Favourite films and books in brick form
Games for 7-year-olds
Battleship is a two-player game that rewards a good memory and a little bluffing. Ravensburger's Pokémon Labyrinth puts Pokémon on the sliding-maze board, and a game takes 20 to 30 minutes. UNO Liars adds bluffing to UNO, and ThinkFun's Rush Hour Junior is a traffic puzzle for one, with 40 challenges.
If you are buying for a family, check player counts: Battleship is strictly for two, Labyrinth takes two to four, and Rush Hour Junior is a puzzle to solve alone.
Builds with moving parts
The LEGO Technic Yellow Motorcycle is a first Technic set: 151 pieces with working steering and a three-piston engine. The K'NEX Dynamic Dino has a battery motor and instructions for six dinosaurs. The LEGO City Vintage Steam Train is the biggest set here at 575 pieces, with a station, a working signal and five minifigures.
For a Harry Potter reader, the LEGO Flying Ford Anglia has opening doors and a removable roof, with Harry, Ron, Hedwig and Scabbers. The LEGO Creator 3in1 Turtle rebuilds into a chameleon or a frog.
Coding without a screen
Learning Resources Botley 2.0 is programmed with a remote, using coding cards to plan a route round obstacles. It needs five AAA batteries. It is marked 5+, so a seven-year-old has room to invent their own courses with its 27 obstacle pieces, and it works well for a brother and sister to share.
Choosing for a seven-year-old
Seven-year-olds can be choosy. Ask what they are reading, watching and playing at school, then look for the toy version: a Pokémon game, a Harry Potter car, a steam train.
When they turn eight, our guide to toys for 8-year-olds moves into deduction games and bigger LEGO sets, and the 6 to 8 guide covers this whole stage.
