Before you choose

Six-year-olds are proud of what they can do on their own. They read a little, follow picture instructions and want games where they can beat a grown-up fairly. The toys that suit them offer a real task with a finish line. Here is what tends to work at six, and ten toys marked between 4+ and 6+ by their makers.

How six-year-olds play

At six, the gap between wanting to do something and being able to do it narrows. Many children can follow a numbered build, keep score in a simple game and spend half an hour on a project that holds their interest. That makes it a good age for first proper LEGO sets, science kits and board games with real rules.

Friendships matter more, and so does what friends are playing. A Pokémon set or a KPop Demon Hunters doll can carry a lot of playground weight at six. That is fine, as long as the toy is also good to play with at home.

  • Building sets with instructions and minifigures
  • Board games with turns, scoring and a winner
  • Experiments and how-things-work kits
  • 3D puzzles and models to display
  • Riding, scooting and playing outside

Building sets for 6-year-olds

LEGO's 6+ sets are a step up from the 4+ range: smaller pieces, longer builds and minifigures. The LEGO Creator 3in1 Space Shuttle rebuilds into an astronaut or a spaceship, the LEGO City Off-Road 4x4 Mountain Truck has 221 pieces and an adventurer, and LEGO Pokémon Charmander and Geodude's Cavern Clash has a lever that breaks a rock to reveal a crystal.

Ravensburger's Lilo & Stitch 3D puzzle is building of a different kind: 72 numbered plastic pieces slot together into a Stitch ball with ears, with no glue.

Games a six-year-old can win

Scrabble Junior has a two-sided board, so a six-year-old can start by matching letters to printed words and move to free play on the other side. Mouse Trap is the opposite kind of game: building the contraption piece by piece is half the fun, and the trap springing at the end is the rest.

Both take two to four players. At six, it helps to choose games where some luck evens out the gap between children and adults.

Science, art and outdoor play

The Galt Explore and Discover Science Lab has 20 experiments with goggles and test tubes. Galt asks for adult supervision, so treat it as a shared project. The Crayola Inspiration Art Case holds 140 crayons, pencils, markers and sheets of paper in one carry case.

Outdoors, the Micro Chilli Base stunt scooter suits a confident rider, and Micro suggests it for ages 5 to 9. Buy a helmet and pads at the same time.

Characters at six

Mattel's KPop Demon Hunters Rumi doll comes in her "How It's Done" stage outfit with her weapon accessory, for a fan of the film who wants to act out its songs. She needs support to stand. Character toys like this one and the Pokémon set can matter a great deal to a six-year-old, so ask what their friends are into before you choose.

A year on, our guide to toys for 7-year-olds adds longer games and harder builds, and the 6 to 8 guide covers these three years together.

Questions

Common questions

What are the best toys for a 6-year-old?
Toys that give them a real task to finish. A LEGO set such as the Creator 3in1 Space Shuttle, a game like Scrabble Junior or Mouse Trap, and the Galt science lab all suit six-year-olds, and all four are marked 6+.
What do 6-year-olds like to do?
Build things from instructions, play games with real rules, collect the characters their friends like and get outside on scooters and bikes. Many also start to enjoy experiments and making things to keep.
Which board games suit a 6-year-old?
Games with short turns and some luck work best. Scrabble Junior is marked 6+ and has a beginner side, and Mouse Trap is marked 6+ with a contraption to build as you play.
Is a stunt scooter suitable for a 6-year-old?
Micro suggests the Chilli Base stunt scooter for ages 5 to 9, with a maximum rider weight of 100 kg. It suits a child who already rides a scooter confidently, and a helmet is a must.
